My cd slot on my laptop wont open but I ant to get a dvd burner..can I?

or some reason my cd drive does not open but i really need to burn some dvds is there any way I can still do that buy buying something that wont cost me a ton?? or how much would it cost to fix that problem?? I just want to be able to burn dvds from my laptop :( HELP!
ALso what is an external dvd burner?? And ve tried everything it really will not open!!
