Why does allowing more air into the burner tube of a Bunsen burner produce a hotter flame?
Adjusting the air hole size to allow more air into the burner tube turns it from a yellow flame to a blue flame. How does the air-to-gas ratio affect the temperature of the flame?
bunsen burners use methane mostly;
in excess of air, 2CH4 + 4O2 --> 2CO2 + 4H2O - this is a complete combustion of methane; it produces a blue flame. The reaction is highly exothermic so a lot of heat is produced.
CH4 + O2 --> C + 2H2O
an incomplete combustion of methane produces a yellow/orange flame and the products of the reaction include soot (carbon), instead of carbon dioxide, which doesn't release any energy because no new bonds are made. energy is still released in the making of the 4 O-H bonds, though.
so this reaction is less exothermic and produces less heat : )
so the more oxygen you have, the more bonds can be made involving oxygen in the products, and the more energy can be released
